Historical Significance:
Iga City in Mie Prefecture, known for its traditional crafts, was the third city in Japan to enact a partnership system. Katsunori and Hiro, a gay couple who moved to Iga, have been instrumental in revitalizing local industries by creating “kumi-himo” (braided cords) and Iga pottery, with the support of understanding local people and businesses.
About Iga Braided Cords:
The origins of Iga braided cords date back to before the Nara period. These cords saw significant development during the middle of the Meiji period (1868-1912) when techniques from Edo braiding were introduced to Iga. This led to Iga becoming the largest producer of high-end hand-knitted cords.
In 1976, Iga braided cords were designated as a “traditional craft” by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, highlighting their cultural and historical importance.
This traditional craft weaves together thin threads to create intricate cords, originally used to adorn kimonos and swords.
